Breastfeeding and brains

A highly respected journal released an excellent study showing the impact of longer duration breastfeeding on lifetime cognitive abilities and achievement: Longer duration of breastfeeding is linked with increased intelligence in adulthood, longer schooling, and higher adult earnings, a study following a group of almost 3500 newborns for 30 years published in The Lancet Global Health journal has found.

As someone who worked hard to breastfeed both my children exclusively for two years each, this is lovely to read.

It is really important to say that this is not a post about critisising those who formula fed, whatever the reason for their decision. It is a post about celebrating the beautiful benefits of mothers milk, and hopefully will encourage governments to give MUCH more help to new mothers in order to allow more to succeed at breastfeeding, and understand the challenges breastfeeding can bring with more realism and patience.
